The UK Police Advanced Riding System "the system" is the basis of all advanced rider training in the UK. The System was devised many years ago to solve the problem of increasing numbers of police vehicle accidents as traffic volumes grew. It has been constantly updated and refined over decades by police riders and instructors but is essentially the same as when it was first devised because the basics don't change. It is a proven safe & efficient system of riding.
Advanced rider training is not the same as novice rider training. Novice riders are taught rules. "Always do this". "Never do that". Every road situation is different and changes constantly so to have a rule for every situation is impractical. In advanced riding we use more guiding principals and fewer rules. Advanced Riding is about making decisions. These courses are designed to teach you how to use the system in order to make decisions.
Convey a pure police system clearly and succinctly
Concentrate on establishing the essential in-depth understanding of the guiding principals which enable the rider to make decisions
To assess the student's capabilities and potential
To tailor the course to suit the ability and requirements of the student
To use available course time effectively by prioritising safety issues
To identify and correct riding faults early in the course
To introduce advanced riding techniques with demonstrations, and full explanations of how, why, and the benefits afforded

To facilitate the development of skilled use of the techniques

For the student to achieve a safe independent advanced ride
The courses are open to all motorcyclists who already have their full licence and a machine capable of the national limit. A working knowledge of The Highway Code and Know Your Road Signs is assumed. The courses are suitable for riders with any of the following aims:
To ride to a professional standard for their occupation
To tune up existing skills or learn new ones
To prepare for an advanced test
To return to riding after a break
To increase confidence
At the start of your advanced motorcycle training course you will be asked to give a demonstration of your ability. The structure of your motorcycle safety course will be founded upon the assessment of your ride. This ensures that your course is specifically tailored to your needs and style of riding.
Next, to fully illustrate the advanced motorcycle training course, the instructor will give a demonstration ride. This will be accompanied by a police-style commentary as the instructor explains, over a high quality one way radio link, in great detail, all aspects of the ride and clearly demonstrates what can be achieved.
Then the advanced motorcycle tuition will begin. There will be a series of rides over a variety of roads and traffic conditions. Sometimes your instructor will be leading and demonstrating various techniques accompanied by his commentary. Sometimes you will be in front and the instructor's commentary continues, pointing out, explaining and adjusting. In between the rides will be comfort / refreshment breaks when you will be encouraged to ask questions and discuss the techniques.
It will be hard work but exciting and a great deal of fun; a learning curve that will totally transform your motorcycle riding.
In conjunction with tailoring your course content to your own needs and requirements you will receive instruction on a wide variety of aspects of advanced motorcycling and motorcycle safety. This includes how to read bends and the correct speed and position on them, overtaking techniques, wet weather riding, feature reading and making progress; comprehensive study of the analysis and use of the visual point; roundabouts, filtering, three lane single carriageways and dual carriageways / motorways; machine control including brakes, gears, throttle and low speed manoeuvring; the importance of rider attitude, how to avoid the red mist and post course over confidence. The contents section of Motorcycle Roadcraft The Police Riders Handbook will give a more detailed insight of the variety of possible course content.
An official DSA Certificate of Rider Competence (insurance discount certificate) is available to every rider who completes any of the SortedRide courses and, on assessment, shows a competent ride.
